Abstract

Two pairs of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) were released on the Dolní Ovčín pond near Hazlov (Cheb district, Czech Republic) in the years 2008–2009. These birds came from captivity with pinioned wings. In 2013, they bred and their fledglings flew away. Moreover, they bred at least once in previous years. Later in 2014–2022, Barnacle Geese occurred annually at the site, their numbers ranging between 8 and 15 individuals and between 0 and 4 breeding pairs. In total, 29 goslings were reared, representing 2.07 goslings per successful pair and 1.32 goslings per breeding pair. In the years 2019–2022, a total of 18 individuals were marked with individual coded colour rings and four individuals only with metal rings. Altogether, 331 re-sightings of 17 individuals were recorded: 188 recoveries from the Czech Republic, 86 from Bavaria and Upper Austria, 47 from Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia and 10 from the Netherlands. Post-breeding movements were recorded mostly in the northern direction to Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia (Germany), where some birds also spend the winter. The highest number of records from the wintering season comes from Bavaria and Upper Austria. Three individuals were found wintering in the Netherlands (provinces of Friesland and Nord Holand).
